The Merlin - Chigwell Lite Black Jacket brings together a hard-wearing technical shell and a timeless outline for a riding jacket that feels like a long-term buy.

You get a full-zip front, front and rear mesh panels, a five-piece D3O armour set for shoulders, elbows and back, and a short jacket-to-trouser connection zip. The sleeves and back are cut for reach, so it moves with you in the riding position. Hardware and zips are corrosion-resistant and rated for daily use. The Cotec cotton is roughly a third lighter than traditional wax cotton.

The fabric is light on the shoulders but dense enough to cut the wind. The fit is true to size with just enough room for a mid-layer underneath. The panels are cut clean and the stitching is set to hold its line over time. Seams are reinforced at the stress points so the shape holds wear after wear.

Pair it with black denim for night or raw indigo and boots for the weekend. Wash cold, hang to dry, and refresh the water-repellent finish once a season.
